We begin the new year full of new hopes. This is horrible. It sucks really. Despite the prolonged holiday, there is no change in reality. Change the digits, a new folder is opened in income tax, but there is no real and effective change in the universe, in nature or whatever.

In fact, we have come out of a phase of very high consumption that is Christmas, for a phase of compensatory attempts to become better people, inspired by the Christian holiday. We all have an ideal about what it is to be better than we are. Basically, we understand that life is constant development in all areas and that to stop developing is a bad thing. So we have a chronic need for development. At least the pushing to change.

It turns out that, inspired by the holiday Christian, inspired by the change in the calendar, inspired by the beautiful junk on TV, we end up making a balance of the year. The worst season for this, poor systems of self-evaluation, poor system of evaluative criteria are the perfect combination to a “just new year depression and frustration”. Let´s understand these three problems:

The time is a time of different kinds of guilt:

1 – Guilt for reviewing or reanimating people we didn’t saw throughout the year;
2 – Blame for do not have enough money to buy all the presents that we would like;
3 – Blame for spending more than we would like;
4 – Blame for eating more than necessary.

Poor evaluation systems:

If we have attained the neurotic and unreal goals we drew in the previous year, we have done nothing more than the obligation. If we do not reach, we are a failure. This is the system: if so, fuck, if not, fault. No evaluation system can consist of only two possibilities of 100% fulfilled (but insignificant, non-rewarding) or null (punitive) results.

This model of evaluation only works in one direction: generating guilt and a sense of failure. So it does not prepare for the contingencies (whatever they may be) that led to non-achievement of the goals to be thought of and can be included in the planning for next year. More than that, many contingencies are variable, so they can only be discovered through planning.

Without a functional evaluation system, the objectives themselves can not be rethought in terms of their real need and importance. That is, how much we need these goals to give continuity in our individual evolutionary process (Haha). This is absolutely important because if goals do not make real sense in life, why draw them? A simple example: Weight loss. For what? Why? How?

40% of the population has “excess” weight. What does that mean? It means that medical science, responsible for the sale of medical products, determined a normality scale for the Body Mass Index. And, if you are out of this measure, you would need to fit in or you are a risk for the Health insurance. The second reason is the fashion industry. The planning of the garment industry to facilitate mass production, necessarily requires the standardization of sizes, and the ideal sizes are those most easily adapt to the production molds. Thus, the image projected by the current discourses order sizes and weights of the clothing and medicine industry. Weight loss for what? Become a millionaire for what? Buying a new car for what? Learn a new language for what?

You see, even if you are a greedy, ambitious, stingy, stuffed, your brain is not, and it needs to be convinced of that goal in order to reach it. We call that motivation. But, you see, your brain will know if you prefer lasagna or new pants. You and I, we know it too. So, a functional evaluation system could really develop real and functional goals for the new year! Unfair and dysfunctional evaluation criteria:

In addition to the fact that the evaluation system is dysfunctional, the evaluation criteria are also dysfunctional. Let us sing platonic ideas, drawn from the bottom of the cave of perfection to be our criteria. We imagine a Ferrari instead of the Ford sedan. We imagine losing 20 pounds instead of being healthier and smiling. The criteria we use to weigh the total success duality X unsuccessful failure are as unfair and dysfunctional as the evaluative system. So, with those criteria in this system, no matter how hard we’ve been in the past year. We will always be frustrated and guilty, for we will never, ever, reach goals that meet these perfect, idolized criteria.

Criteria must deal with reality. They need to take into account environmental contingencies, they need to take account of progression criteria in the development of the objective. The criteria must be fair and contemplate the real and possible. After all, no one, who works and has other occupations, can learn a new language and have fluency in it in 12 months. Neither living in the country (of course, if the person has 100% dedication, it is possible). No one achieves goals that need training and development in 12 months leading is not normal in life. In the link, you can find some good quality sel-help

Companies know this, and their goals and developments are usually planned in 5 years. For, companies know that, a postgraduate course lasts on average 18 months of course plus 6 months for Paper. That is, it will not be possible to acquire a new standard in less than 24 months.

The suggestion is to deal with ourselves like with the same care we do with our dogs!

Ano novo, culpa, promessas e realidade

1 – Culpa por rever ou reamar pessoas que vimos pouco ao longo do ano;

2 – Culpa por não ter dinheiro para comprar todos os presentes que gostaríamos;

3 – Culpa por gastar mais do que gostaríamos;
